The Kenya Prime Minister
Hon. Raila Odinga
Treasury Building 14th. FL.
PO Box 74434-00200
Nairobi, Kenya
Dear Sir,
RE: CORRUPTION MULTIPLIED:
There is evidence that those who were initially allocated the Mau Forest, cut down and sold all the Government commercial trees which had been planted many years ago. After they sold all the trees, they then sold the land they were allocated. Most of those being evicted are the new settlers who bought the land. The initial beneficiaries of the Mau Forest, earned money from two quarters. They received millions of shillings from the sale of the Government trees. They also earned thousands of shillings from the sale of the land they received free.
It is therefore in order to deduce that the main reason behind the allocation of the Mau Forest, was to grab and to sell the thousands of trees which belonged to the Government.
As the Government prepares to compensate those who bought the land in Mau, it should recover all the money received from the sale of those Government trees and from the sale of each piece of land in Mau. All the money accrued from the sale of the trees and from the sale of all the land in Mau, belong to the Kenya Government and hence to Kenyans.
Kenyans have a right to demand for the recovery of their money from those who sold the trees and the land in Mau. The trees and the land in Mau belonged to all Kenyans and not to the few individuals. The mistake of compensating the wrong individuals should not be made because it may haunt Kenya forever. The Mau Forest has been a water catchments area for many years and should not have been allocated to anyone in the first place. Those in the Government at the time should have known that better. It should also be remembered that hundreds of Kenyan workers who lived in the Forest Stations around the Mau Forest, with their families for many years, were brutally and arrogantly evicted by the Kenya Government in 1985, in order to pave way for the allocation of the Mau Forest to the new settlers who sold the Government trees. The whole World supports the Kenya Prime Minister in his efforts to conserve the Kenya water catchments. And despite the opposition, the insults, the threats and the name calling, he should remain strong, determined and courageous.
