Betty Nambooze, the Democratic Party spokesperson who was blocked on Monday from boarding a plane at Entebbe International Airport en route to South African where she had been referred for medical attention has accused the government of sentencing her to death.

The outspoken Nambooze who was instead referred to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli for questioning on her alleged role in September was interrogated for one hour.

Ms Nambooze said she was in agony and said that government acted inhumanely in blocking her travel and was sentencing her to death by preventing her from receiving treatment.

“I am not medically fit. I need to do so many things in order for my life to be restored in its normal situation. But the government, which is responsible for me is not on my side. This is something to do with my life. It is as if these people have sentenced me to death without my knowledge,” Nambooze said.

This morning Nambooze, her husband Henry Bakireke and her lawyer, Elias Lukwago met the Country Manager for South African Airways to discuss her travel. Nambooze was clearly in pain, grimacing consistently as she waited for the meeting to start.

For the past two months she has been suffering from the undiagnosed condition and has been bed ridden.

Speaking after the meeting, Lukwago said his client has all the relevant travel documents to allow her to travel to Johannesburg.

Nambooze says that she still intends to seek treatment abroad despite summons for her to appear in court to answer to charges related to the riots.
